IBM device X, BladeCenter server business up for grabs | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

IBM has shopped round its Intel-based mostly device X and BladeCenter server enterprise to a number of advantage buyers the past few months, despite the fact the company has had essentially the most wide talks with Lenovo, in accordance with sources widely wide-spread with the talks.

IBM's on-again-off-again negotiations with Lenovo are actually lower back on besides the fact that children the two parties continue to be "some distance apart on price" and it may take a while to reach an contract, in keeping with sources. Lenovo additionally purchased large Blue's laptop enterprise almost 10 years ago.

Lenovo can be a sensible choice through IBM, some analysts trust, given the prior relationship between both corporations. One analyst reserved judgment despite the fact, saying she would must see the details as soon as the deal is signed.

"we would want to see what form the ongoing relationship between both would take. With so many services and software delivered on the x86 platform across the complete server market, i might consider Lenovo would need some form of favored nation reputation with IBM for it to work for both events," observed Jean Bozman, research vice chairman with IDC Corp., a technology analysis company based in Framingham, Mass. "it's a tricky proposition being in that x86 enterprise."

whereas IBM has yet to without delay ascertain efforts to sell its collection X line of x86 servers, all the way through a conference name final week reporting its 2nd quarter financials, IBM Chief financial Officer Mark Loughridge vaguely talked about a "massive divestiture" it expected to make by way of the conclusion of this yr, that could doubtless be put off until next yr. Loughridge declined to identify the enterprise IBM could promote, asserting most effective that the business would now not drive such a deal for the sake of beating some yr-end cut-off date.

all through that name final week, IBM pronounced that its revenues from its equipment X company were down 11% in the 2d quarter in comparison to the equal quarter last year. Even worse, revenues from its vigor methods enterprise dove 25% within the quarter compared to the equal quarter ultimate yr.

The handiest vivid spot for IBM's server hardware company become its equipment Z mainframe company, which grew 10% in the quarter. in all probability greater importantly, the delivery of equipment Z computing power, often known as MIPS (millions of guidelines per 2nd) leaped 23%.

despite the performance of the power systems business this yr, IBM is not considering promoting off any items of it. The profit margins on these techniques are a great deal higher than on gadget X, and they also existing more possibility for IBM to introduce technical improvements.

"You can not innovate on [the System X] platform for very long before Intel just sucks every little thing into the chip, it's a pure commodity play," noted one source near IBM. "Given the profits margins, it doesn't make sense to maintain pumping money into x86 servers simply to run SAP illustration quicker. No thanks."

IDC's Bozman disagrees, noting that IBM has a extremely vast latitude of features and application it could pull together from across its many software and capabilities divisions that may well be delivered for x86-primarily based servers.

"IBM is an organization it really is 50% capabilities and 20% to 25% utility, with things like analytics, huge statistics and cloud they might innovate across the x86 platform, even if these solutions are constructed with the aid of them or a person else," Bozman noted.

Some observers accept as true with the deal would advantage both events since it plays to their respective strengths.

"[IBM doesn't] have the can charge constitution nor the stomach to play in this sort of fiercely aggressive house. and they do not need the laptop enterprise you need to pressure the volumes you need to get competitive part pricing," pointed out Andrew Feldman, frequent manager and company vice chairman of AMD's Server business Unit. "This may come to be an extremely successful circulate for each side."

  • While a great value, it still struggles with color accuracy for professional workloads.
  • If you're looking for a high-resolution, ultra-fast curved monitor for cheap, though, it's the perfect option.
  • Massdrop is one of my favorite tech companies. While the core business is great for finding unique tech products and getting a good deal on them in the process, the ever-expanding range of "Massdrop-made" tech is excellent. Massdrop continues to deliver products that satisfy the needs of its customers with a reasonable price tag.

If you're unaware, Massdrop allows you to vote on products you want to buy. The more people confirm they'll buy something, the cheaper it gets. In addition to running "drops," Massdrop also sells its own products, which aim to be high-quality, high-value alternatives to branded staples.

Perhaps the most popular of the Massdrop-made products is the Vast ultrawide monitor ($550). This monitor balances everything I want an in a display, and does so without breaking the bank. In this Massdrop Vast review, I'll show why, despite its shortcomings, it's worth every penny.

    Overview of the Massdrop Vast

The Vast is a curved 35-inch 4K ultrawide gaming monitor with a refresh rate of up to 100Hz. If you're unaware, ultrawide monitors use an aspect ratio of 21:9 as opposed to the more traditional 16:9. That's the same aspect ratio as most movies, and ultrawides were originally intended for that purpose: watching movies without black borders. However, the extra screen estate in your peripheral vision helps for gaming and productivity, and the Vast captures that essence perfectly.

It's a 4K monitor, but it doesn't have quite as many pixels as a 4K monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Using the same corner-to-corner measuring method, ultrawides are wider, but shorter than their 16:9 counterparts. Because of that, the Vast has a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 pixels instead of the 3,840 x 2,160 pixels seen on most UHD panels.

Massdrop Vast 1Massdrop Setting up the Massdrop Vast

The Massdrop Vast is simple to set up. All you have to do is set the monitor on its face and screw in the the stand to the VESA mount. The spring-actuated height adjustment of the stand — where a spring in the stand helps move the display up and down — will fight against gravity, though, and it kicked me like a horse while setting up and moving the display.

The stand is something of a marvel for what you're paying. While there's no swivel, the stand allows 4.3 inches of spring-actuated height adjustment, 20 degrees of tilt, and a full 90 degrees of pivot. Despite its massive size, the Vast can be turned sideways for use as a second monitor or just to dig deeper into Reddit.

As far as connecting the monitor, there aren't many options, but that's only relevant for those looking for multiple displays. You have the option of three HDMI ports (one v2.0 and two v1.4) and a DisplayPort v1.2 port. Massdrop doesn't have the version types printed by the ports, so you'll need to consult the manual to ensure you're getting the full refresh rate out of your connection.

    Masdrop Vast 2Massdrop

There's a button on the back right corner of the monitor for powering it on and accessing the menu. Put bluntly, Massdrop's server navigation is horrible. "Down" changes the picture mode, "up" sets a crosshair in the center of the screen, "left" shows you your inputs, and, finally, "right" gives you the full menu.

While that's easy to figure out, trying to change settings is anything but. Clicking the button will shut off the monitor, and you better believe I turned it off more than once while trying to change settings. You have to press "right" to confirm setting changes, which is very counterintuitive.

Groaning aside, the Vast is still pretty simple to set up, even if configuration goes against the grain. It's unlikely you'll need to dig in the settings too much, but it's a good idea to learn the system so you don't have to deal with the headache of constantly turning off your display.

How "going wide" can help with productivity

The selling point of the Vast is the curved, UHD display. I'm a junkie for ultrawide monitors — you can read my guide on the best ultrawide monitors to see that in action — so the Vast scratches an itch that few other displays can. The 35 inches of screen estate is perfect for having two browser windows open at a time or multi-tasking with maximum efficiency.

For my purposes as a writer, the 21:9 aspect ratio works particularly well. While researching a piece, I can use half the display to have my findings open while the other half holds my notes or research documents. The Vast makes you feel spoiled when it comes to productivity. Moving to my laptop with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the screen feels cramped as Word or Google Docs resize to fit my text on screen and webpages reduce to a near mobile size.

    Massdrop Vast 3Massdrop

Other productivity tasks, such as photo and video editing, are perfectly suited for an ultrawide display, too. As a hobby photographer, the Vast provides the extra screen size to see all of my settings, presets and photos in Lightroom and provide an overview of the timeline in Premiere. While not the best display for content creation — more on that later — the size is undeniable.

Outside of work, the Vast is perfect for media consumption. Gaming is great thanks to the 100Hz refresh rate and FreeSync support, and movies look fantastic without black borders. Even with those upsides, there are some concerns when using an ultrawide display.

    The downsides of going wide

It comes down to platform and application support, but not all content is suitable for the 21:9 aspect ratio. YouTube, for example, will still attempt to display content in a 16:9 aspect ratio. So, instead of the black bars on top and bottom disappearing when watching an ultrawide YouTube video, you'll have black bars all around the image.

These issues are not exclusive to the Vast, of course, but they are a consideration when going to checkout. The Vast is capable of providing an excellent media experience, but the support of certain platforms and applications has yet to catch up to the ultrawide crowd.

    A true gaming monitor

For the price, the resolution, aspect ratio, and size of the Vast are more than enough. What makes this monitor special, though, is its refresh rate. The Vast operates at a 100Hz refresh rate, making it a great choice for gaming. Despite not reaching the high refresh rates of some 16:9 gaming monitors, the Vast still earned a place in our best gaming monitor guide.

    Massdrop Vast 4Massdrop

If you're unaware, refresh rate measures how often a display can refill its buffer. For gaming, a higher refresh rate is essential. If you have a game running at 120 frames per second but a display that only has a refresh rate of 60Hz, you're effectively missing half of the frames that would display otherwise.

Higher refresh rates mean smoother and clearer motion during intense action. However, as the frame rate increases, so does the likelihood of screen tearing and stuttering. Thankfully, the Vast bypasses that issue with FreeSync integration.

It supports FreeSync from 49-100Hz. FreeSync is a variable refresh rate technology that allows the monitor to dynamically control the refresh rate based on the input its given. In the real world, that means no screen tearing, stuttering, or artifacts. While G-Sync is the arguably better variable refresh rate tech, FreeSync is a nice trade-off given the Vast's low price tag.

    Color and visual display

Massdrop uses a VA panel for the Vast, which it claims is the "best of both worlds." While it's true that the 100Hz refresh rate and 2-millisecond G2G response time trades blows with high-end TN panels, Massdrop's claim that the Vast has "color performance that's on par with first-rate IPS panels" simply isn't true.

In short, the Vast isn't color accurate at all. There's way too much blue in the image, and even after calibration, it's hard to get a professional-level result. Furthermore, the VA panel isn't especially bright, though it should work well in environments that are fairly well lit.

It does cover 100% of the sRGB spectrum, but that's not relevant considering the saturation on nearly all colors misses the mark. The Vast can be tweaked to provide better color accuracy, but you won't get a high-end result. You'll also have to contend with the infuriating menu to change any settings.

The contrast is good, though, especially for a VA panel. The Vast boasts contrast of 2,500:1 and it can ship with even better contrast out of the box.

For any content creation, the Vast is best reserved for enthusiasts. The color accuracy is totally off, and even after tweaking, it can't contend with first-rate IPS panels. Don't believe the marketing; the Massdrop Vast is a gaming monitor, so you shouldn't try to mix that with any serious content creation.

    The verdict

Massdrop's marketing doesn't help the Vast. When it's looked at as a content creation and gaming monitor, it simply doesn't make the cut, no matter how inexpensive it is. However, as a value-focused gaming monitor that can be tweaked for decent color accuracy, the Vast is astounding. The value simply can't be matched by any other ultrawide on the market.

If you're in the market for a gaming ultrawide without emptying your wallet, the Vast is the first option you should look toward.

The X7-2L model is a storage-optimized 2U system that also supports up to two processors and 1.5 TB of memory, but it can handle up to 12 3.5 inch drives. The final model, X7-8, is a scale-up 5U server that supports up to eight processors, 6 TB of memory and eight 2.5 inch drives.

For information about pricing and how to purchase servers, buyers should directly contact Oracle.

    Supermicro

Of all these featured server hardware vendors, Supermicro Computer Inc. offers the largest server selection, but its categorization can make it difficult to navigate the options.

In addition to towers, mid-towers and mini-towers, Supermicro offers SuperServer computers, SuperBlade systems, Ultra 1U and 2U platforms, BigTwin 2U four-node systems, FatTwin 4U multi-node systems, SuperStorage servers, GPU platforms with up to eight GPUs, and multiprocessor servers that support up to eight CPUs.

For the most part, however, the rack servers are included in the SuperServer series, with some of the other categories integrated into that category. The blade servers are part of the SuperBlade series.

The SuperServer series includes hundreds of models, with a range that can accommodate just about any workload. The servers come in 1U, 2U, 3U and 4U form factors, and with one, two or four sockets. The SuperBlade series includes about 50 models.

As with rack servers, there is something for everyone. Supermicro recommends that customers purchase servers from authorized local resellers or distributors in order to receive guaranteed local support and services.

Because Supermicro sells so many products, prices can vary greatly depending on the server model and configuration. Buyers must do their homework or work with resellers to pick the best option.

Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 review | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

In its broadest product launch since acquiring IBM's System x portfolio, Lenovo has gone back to the drawing board and completely redesigned its ThinkSystem servers from the ground up. They deliver a wealth of new features and in this exclusive review we bring you a first look at its ThinkSystem SR650 general purpose 2U rack server.

Support for Intel's Xeon Scalable CPU family is at the top of Lenovo's agenda and the SR650 shows off a new storage design offering more choices. Along with support for up to 14 LFF or 24 SFF drives, the SR650 features embedded NMVe PCI-Express ports as standard, while the AnyBay carriers from previous generations increase storage versatility.

A welcome update for us is Lenovo's embedded XCC (xClarity Controller) chip. Remote server management has been a major weakness of current System x and ThinkServer platforms and the XCC puts it firmly alongside Dell's iDRAC9 and HPE's iLO5 for features.

    Management

The first benefit of the ThinkSystem firmware became apparent when we powered the SR650 up; boot times have been drastically reduced. Our lab's System x3550 M5 rack server takes a yawn-inducing 6 minutes to go from power on to OS login, whereas the SR650 cut our waiting time to 110 seconds.

OS deployment is easier too, as the xClarity Provisioning Manager provides an assisted installation routine. Selected during boot up, it helped us get a RAID array created and Windows Server 2016 loaded with all the correct drivers inside 30 minutes.

There's much more, as the XCC web interface is like nothing we've seen from Lenovo before. It's slick home page opens with a wealth of information about all critical components, quick access to remote control, a rundown on all firmware versions and a set of coloured blocks showing utilization and system wide power usage.

It provides a full inventory of every hardware component and a detailed breakdown of power usage, component utilization, fan and voltage status plus system temperatures. You also have direct configuration access to the RAID controllers, firmware update tools and options to set server, firmware and access security.

After updating the lab's xClarity Administrator Hyper-V host to v1.3.2, we were able to add the SR650 to its console, remotely monitor it and use its image library for centralized OS deployment. We also used Lenovo's xClarity Mobile iOS app on our iPad to remotely access the Administrator host and a new feature for cellular-equipped mobiles is the ability to tether them directly to the ThinkSystem's front USB port for local monitoring.

    Storage

The server's front panel uses the popular 8+8+8 drive bay configuration, allowing it to support from 8 to 24 SFF drives (HPE's DL380 Gen10 supports 30 SSF drives). The SR650 LFF model has room for up to 12 drives at the front and this chassis also supports an optional two-bay cage fitted at the rear in place of the 3-slot PCI-Express riser.

Lenovo's AnyBay is unique as it supports SAS, SATA, standard SSD or NVMe PCIe SSD interfaces in the same bay. With the appropriate AnyBay backplane factory fitted (and dual CPUs), the SR650 16-bay model can handle up to eight of these bays.

The clincher is the pair of embedded dual-port NVMe PCIe connectors on the motherboard. Other server vendors require you to purchase an optional adapter card for NVMe drives but the SR650 supports four out of the box at no extra cost -- the extra four require Lenovo's optional NVMe switch adapter.

RAID choices are plentiful with the review system including a ThinkSystem 930-8i SAS3 adapter fitted in the dedicated PCI-Express slot in the centre of the motherboard and including 2GB of battery protected Flash cache. Lenovo also offers a dual M.2 SATA SSD enablement kit and two mirrored 128GB modules for only £328.

    Expansion and power

Internally, the server is well designed with easy access afforded to all major components. The SR650 supports the entire Xeon Scalable family with the price of our review system including dual 8-core 2.1GHz Xeon Silver 4110 CPUs partnered by 32GB of TRuDDR4 memory.

The Xeon Silver CPUs are aimed at entry-level data centre applications with all five models supporting 2,400MHz memory, 768GB per socket plus Intel's HT and Turbo Boost technologies. Their low 85W TDP was reflected in our power tests, and the server drew 80W in idle and a mere 118W under extreme load.

The server was supplied with the full complement of six internal hot-swap cooling fans and dual 750W Platinum hot-plug PSUs. Other PSU options include 550W, 750W Titanium, 1100W and 1600W and all share a common form factor across the entire ThinkSystem range.

Instead of embedded network ports, the motherboard provides a LOM slot which links up with the C624 PCH and supports dual or quad Gigabit and 10GbE cards. Lenovo's Infiniband and 25/40/100GbE cards require a separate riser with an ML2 slot.

    Conclusion

The ThinkSystem SR650 represent a huge step forward for Lenovo as it's well designed, good value and highly expandable. Support for the Xeon Scalable family allows it to be customized to suit any workload, storage features see big improvement and the new xClarity Controller finally brings Lenovo into 21st-century server management.
