    ISACA has launched a new slate of infosec training and resource programs. Called the Cybersecurity Nexus (CSX), the program combines research, guidance, certificates and certifications, education, mentoring and community collaboration, all geared toward ushering more would-be security pros into the industry.

    Robert E. Stroud, president-elect of ISACA and vice president of strategy and innovation at Islandia, N.Y.-based CA Technologies Inc., said the initiative is meant to provide practical knowledge, training and advice to ease new security pros into the industry, whether they're recent college graduates, work in other IT disciplines, or are on a non-traditional career path.

    The ultimate driver for the program's creation, Stroud said, is the shortage of qualified information security professionals. ISACA conservatively estimated that the industry needs between 600,000 and 900,000 more people to meet the current demand; (ISC)2 Executive Director W. Hord Tipton said recently that the field needs as many as 2 million more practitioners in the next five years.

    "We clearly see all enterprises are becoming very concerned about security, but are lacking the skill set," Stroud said. "Many of our student members identify security as an area they want to get into, and [then] they found they didn't have the right skills to be effective in the field."

    Though Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based ISACA is largely known as an IT audit organization, Stroud said nearly 25% of its 120,000 members worldwide work in information security. He acknowledged the organization sees CSX an opportunity to grow its ranks to include those new to infosec.

    The cornerstone of ISACA's CSX program is a new certificate-certification combination. Set to launch in September, the organization's first-ever security certificate, the Cybersecurity Fundamentals Certificate (CFC), will require individuals pass a knowledge-based exam. Stroud said CFC will help employers validate an applicant's mastery of basic infosec concepts among candidates that lack practical experience.

    Accompanying it next year will be a mid-level security certification – currently unnamed -- geared toward those who have between three and five years of industry experience. Stroud said the mid-level certification will push infosec practitioners beyond basic fundamentals by combining technical knowledge with management and communication skills.

    Supporting the certificate and certification programs will be a variety of new training vehicles, ranging from one-hour webinars to multi-day in-person and online courses.

    Once its new programs debut, ISACA hopes the entry-level certificate and the mid-level certification will not only usher new technologists into the industry, but also create a smooth information security certification path that leads practitioners to its advanced certifications, including the popular Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification.

    Growing information security certification competition?

    ISACA's moves may signal a renewed competition in the infosec certification and training market. Its CISM designation has long competed with (ISC)2's gold-standard Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification, and its move toward the low-end of the market will place it squarely against other established certifications, namely CompTIA's well-known Security+.

    Stroud, however, downplayed the competitive aspect of ISACA's maneuvers, noting that the organization partners with (ISC)2, and that its new certification and training programs will be unique by building on ISACA's experience in areas like IT governance and risk management.

    (ISC)2's Tipton acknowledged that there "definitely is" increasing competition among training and certification organizations, particularly for new and young infosec professionals. He said the competition is inevitable given the explosive growth in IT security, but can only serve to benefit the industry in attracting new talent to the field, particularly women.

    An ISACA member himself, Tipton said he's pleased to see ISACA add to its offerings for information security-focused members, though he doesn't believe they will affect the market for (ISC)2's certifications.

    "With our certifications, our people are averaging $26,000 more in salary beyond those people practicing security without a certification," Tipton said. "And once we have them, we don't lose them. They tend to stay with us."

    That said, (ISC)2's commitment to industry experience -- four years for the CISSP and one year for its less-revered SSCP credential -- may create an opportunity for ISACA to develop a relationship with infosec pros before (ISC)2 can. Tipton reaffirmed that (ISC)2 has no plans to alter its experience-centric strategy by creating an introductory-level certificate.

    "We don't have a program where somebody can come in cold, take a test and become a member of (ISC)2. We didn't start out that way and we haven't grown that way," Tipton said. "The thing that differentiates us from practically all the other certification organizations is the absolute requirement for experience; we do not waive it."

    Training vs. certification: Not one in the same

    Information security training expert Shon Harris, president of Plano, Texas-based training firm Logical Security, said even in light of ISACA's plans to draw new recruits into information security, she doesn't blame (ISC)2 for staying true to its experience-focused roots.

    "I don't know that it's their responsibility to do that," Harris said. "It would be very expensive for them to build out a program that would bring somebody up from entry level to where they can be useful in the field."

    Harris said she believes there is an opportunity for ISACA's efforts to succeed, but its program must be structured to support not only the fundamentals of IT and information security, but also do so in a way that builds participants up slowly over a long period of time.

    "We do need more people in our market, but we need people who have the skill set," Harris said. "CompTIA has done a better job than anyone though with Server+, Network+, Security+ and CASP. This is really a useful 'roadmap' to what needs to be learned and in what order."

    Harris, though, said she is skeptical of the training offerings provided by all the infosec certifying bodies, because their business model depends on training people for their exams, not necessarily developing the skills needed to help future employers.

    Tipton said contrary to what some believe, (ISC)2 has never been in the training business per se. He said (ISC)2 has built its strategy on partnering with colleges and universities because it's difficult to enter the information security field without a formal education based on a detailed, well-structured curriculum.

    "I spend as much time explaining what CISSPs can't do, as I do explaining what they can do," Tipton said. "So training has to fill the gaps, but it does not, in my opinion, eliminate the need for that basic education in information security."

    Despite those challenges, ISACA's Stroud believes his organization can succeed by becoming the destination for new information security professionals looking to begin their career journey.

    "We want to help industry professionals advance their profession, promote their careers, and provide guidance and certification that the industry values," Stroud said.

    A web service contract, usually expressed via a WSDL, describes the relationship between the web services that you publish and the manner in which an external client can interact with them. By the same token, you can use other developers' public contracts to consume their applications without needing to know the details or even the language and platform they use to implement their web service.

    These contracts can be made more durable by following certain principles, such as loose coupling, XML strategy selection, and versioning.

    Integrating Through Loose Coupling

    An important aspect of web services design is to ensure that the web services are loosely coupled. Web services are loosely coupled when you separate the internal implementation from the interface exposed to the user of your service. The web service has an interface defined by the WSDL that is exposed to the outside world. The internal implementation of a web service is the specific application server that it runs on or the EJBs that do the business logic. If you need to change your application server, the user of the service is not affected because there is a change only to the internal implementation. When this is ensured, the user of the web service does not need to get involved in testing changes unless the interface changes as defined by the WSDL. You might still want to test with the client even if the WSDL doesn't change, to make sure that SLAs and performance requirements can still be met.

    Using the WSDL, however, is not enough to guarantee loose coupling. If your WSDL is automatically generated from the code and you change the code, the WSDL changes, thus making it tightly coupled to the code. WebLogic Workshop provides XQuery Maps which is a simple, declarative way of describing how your Java code relates to the WSDL of your web service. If your Java code changes over time, you can change your XQuery Map so that your WSDL stays intact. XQuery Map maps the Java code to your WSDL. When the Java code changes, the mapping can be alerted to keep the WSDL the same. This enables you to truly realize the promise of loose coupling. WebLogic also provides the facility of modeling the WSDL in XMLSpy and then importing it into WebLogic Workshop. With this WSDL, you can create a web service in WebLogic Workshop. See Figures 5.2 and 5.3 for an illustration of the modeling and importing of WSDL.

    This map specifies that the getTotalPrice Java method receives an XML document that contains an order with multiple line items, each with a name, amount, and price. These fields are extracted from the XML message and mapped into Java arrays. Similarly, the float value that is returned from the method is placed in the context of a simple XML document that has a <totalPrice> tag.

    Choosing an XML Strategy

    XML is the messaging standard for web services. You have to choose the right strategy for handling XML messages in web services, depending on how the web services you are designing fit into the overall application.

    The XML strategy that you will use depends on two criteria. One is whether you have any application logic and whether you are exposing the application logic. The second criterion is whether the interface to the web service you are developing has a predefined XML Schema and whether you want to define your own.

    This can lead to four different strategies for handling XML Schemas:

  • Defined application logic and predefined XML Schema—In this case, the strategy that you use is mapping between defined incoming messages to fields in your internal data types. XQuery maps in WebLogic Workshop can be used to map the data.

  • No internal classes and predefined XML Schema—If schemas are defined in the WSDL file, you should import the WSDL in WebLogic Workshop and let XML Beans accept the schema file and return a set of Java classes that a developer can conveniently leverage to process any XML document that conforms to the original schema file. Having schema definitions at the core of the XML Beans system provides a variety of benefits. For example, when you first receive an XML document for processing, you can validate the data based on the schema definition. Any time you manipulate the XML document via the schema-inspired Java classes, the XML Beans system can always ensure that all changes remain consistent with the prevailing schema definition. This unambiguously disallows the creation of invalid XML documents.

  • When internal classes are defined and the schema is not defined, you should define your schema according to your internal classes. If both are not defined, first define the schemas and then derive the Java classes from there. This follows the concept of designing WSDL first, as described in the earlier section.

  • Versioning New Releases

    You need to consider versioning of your web service to facilitate managing multiple versions of a web service. Versioning should minimize code replication and maximize code reuse. It should also put a logical and manageable naming paradigm in place. This allows for upgrades and improvements to be made to existing web services, while continuously supporting previously released versions of that web service.

    Two areas should be considered for versioning a web service: the public interface, as described by the WSDL file, and the web service implementation, including its conversational state.

    Versioning the Public Interface

    You can version the public interface—specifically, your WSDL—in different ways:

    In this approach, the XML Schema does not change and there is no change in your SOAP message. The advantage in this option is that you can insulate your users from changing schemas. The drawback is that there is no reference to the version validate_v1_2 within the SOAP message, so you cannot use management tools that can direct the message to the right version:

  • Use a date stamp as part of the target namespace of your XML Schema. This is in compliance with the W3C XML Schema specification. The disadvantage here is that your schema changes every time the version changes. The advantage of this approach is that you can see the version in your SOAP messages, and you can write code or use management tools to direct the web service to the right version, according to the SOAP message:

  • <SOAP-ENV:Body> <m:inValidateConfigv1_2xmlns:m=""> ... </SOAP-ENV:Body>
  • Add new operations to the WSDL and support old ones until the user moves to the new operation. You can add new operations to the public interface of a web service to reflect the new versions, keeping the existing operations. The advantage of doing so is that you do not disrupt clients that rely on the web service. By adding new operations and making them known to clients, you can gradually shift clients over to a new set of operations, but you should leave the original operations intact for backward compatibility. For example, the operation section of the WSDL will look as shown here:

A given service can advertise more than one interface that represents its different versions. Different interfaces have different tModels. The service can reference the tModel for each of the interface in its tModelInstanceDetails collection. tModelInstanceDetails is a class that has tModelKey as a mandatory attribute.

  • Versioning the Implementation

    WebLogic Workshop uses Java serialization to persist the state associated with web service requests and conversations. For this reason, the primary requirement for supporting versioned implementations is maintaining backward serialization compatibility. Specifically, it must be possible to load state into the current version of a class that was stored using any older versions of that class.

    Versioning Lifecycle

    Understanding the versioning lifecycle will help you to implement the new versions of your web service and deprecate the older versions effectively. First, you need to put together a plan for the lifecycle of the web services you are supporting. The main aspects of the plan of the versioning lifecycle are listed here:

  • Your plan should contain the frequency of the release of your versions. For example, you could release one version per year. Consider how many versions of the web service you want to support in parallel.

  • The plan should also contain the time frame for your users to move to the new version. This would be the same as the time you would support an older version after the new one is released.

  • Consider using a pilot for the new version of the web services with an early release of version.

  • Consider releasing new functionality and conformance to new web service specifications only through this versioning strategy, as with software releases.

  • Communicate the versioning strategy to the users of your web service.

  • After you lay out the versioning strategy for each version, follow these steps to release each version of your web service:

  • Make changes to the services that you are supporting, as detailed in the previous sections.

  • Do unit and functional testing of the service.

  • Deploy the new service either through new WSDLs for users of the service or to UDDI registries.

  • Notify the consumers of your new service and pilot the new service with one of your consumers.

  • Run the new and old versions in parallel for the time frame you have allocated in your versioning plan.

  • Notify the consumers of the date when the old service is obsoleted.

  • Remove the old service version from descriptions, registries, and so on to keep new consumers from discovering and using the old web service. Remove the functional behavior of the old service; return only an appropriate error message.

Because Trump wasn’t spending as much on television all along, it seemed like his team wasn’t investing in changing anyone’s minds. But they were: they were just doing it online.

    Coby’s team took full advantage of the ability to perform massive tests with its ads. On any given day, Coby says, the campaign was running 40,000 to 50,000 variants of its ads, testing how they performed in different formats, with subtitles and without, and static versus video, among other small differences. On the day of the third presidential debate in October, the team ran 175,000 variations. Coby calls this approach “A/B testing on steroids.” The more variations the team was able to produce, Coby says, the higher the likelihood that its ads would actually be served to Facebook users. “Every ad network and platform wants to serve the ad that’s going to get the most engagement,” Coby says.

    Misinformation is defined as the action of misinforming or condition of being misinformed; or erroneous or incorrect information. Misinformation differs from propaganda in that it always refers to something which is not true. It differs from disinformation in that it is “intention neutral”: it isn’t deliberate, it’s just wrong or mistaken.
